The goal of Urban Discovery is to maximize your score within a set time limit by visiting mapped control locations. Each location is worth a different point value based on difficulty and distance. Instead of punching physical controls, you answer simple multiple choice questions based on interesting city features that are visible at the control locations.

The map includes portions of Elysian Park and the surrounding Echo Park community. A nice combination of park, hilly residential areas, and flatter commercial areas.

We will have a mass start at 9:00am. Participants are welcome to start late, but may not be allowed the full time limit.

We were unable to reserve our usual picnic site so will be securing tables on a first-come, first-serve basis. We expect to be next to Stadium Way south of Academy Road. Watch carefully for orienteering signs.

Registration categories (Junior is born in 2005 or later):

Individual classes:

• Junior Male

• Junior Female

• Adult Male

• Adult Female

Group classes:

• Adult Group – all Adults 

• Junior Group – all Juniors

• Family Group – some Adults, some Juniors. Don't have to be related.

The following standard LAOC protocols will be in place at this event:

• Please pre-register. $10 additional fee per person for on-site registration dependent on map availability.

• Bring your own water and snacks. No water will be placed on the course. We will have water available at the assembly area.

• Please take advantage of our online beginner training. If you need additional training or have questions, let us know when you arrive. On-site training will depend on volunteer availability.

• Please do not attend if you are sick.

Liability Waiver - Everyone must have a waiver on file. The registration system gives you an opportunity to accept the waiver for yourself or your family members. Minors whose registration is not handled by a parent/guardian must print out the form and bring it with them with a parent/guardian signature.

ANNUAL MEETING:

The annual membership meeting of LAOC will take place immediately following this event. Bring some snacks, stick around, and learn what we're up to.
