Map and Course Notes

Notes from Course Setter Rex Winterbottom:

Thanks to the Los Angeles Orienteering Club to being open to this idea and making our 4 adventures possible.

Thanks to Clare Durand for the event directing and Karen Murphy, LAOC treasurer, for coordinating all the payments for the permits.

Thanks to vetters for carefully investigating the courses and mapping: Alex Kiperman, Eugene Kiperman, Rich Hoesly, Bruce Corning, and Eva Wheeler-Sagiao (SDO).

In general, if you haven't orienteered on a "Sprint Map" before, mapped to the ISSprOM standard, familiarize yourself with these kinds of maps. For example, Los Angeles Orienteering Club's US Champs Sprint in 2022 at Pierce College. I found this image online: https://www.sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=Charlie&map=3428

Typically rendered at 1:4000 or 1:3000 scale, they show much more detail. Multi-level areas are shown with diagonal striping. The alligator teeth mean it's uncrossable at the higher level but crossable at the lower level. Canopy is light gray if it's not multi-level. Thick black lines are usually uncrossable walls or fences if not cliffs and you can't cross them even if you can manage to cross them. Olive green is "forbidden area" and you can't cross it even if it looks like you could physically cross it. You will be disqualified if observed breaking the rules of orienteering or the mapping standard.
