Course Setter Notes:

Much of the area experienced fires in recent years and is faster running than the map indicates. Accuracy of vegetation mapping was only verified where relevant to control placement; assume mapped vegetation unrelated to controls is inaccurate.

Many unmapped paths were found. Some of these were created by earth movers and are very noticeable, but most are smaller footpaths, likely used to access homeless camps. Most of the homeless camps appear to have been abandoned and no controls were placed close to tents. There are however homeless camps dotted around the area so it is possible that your route choice will take you close to tents; especially those not seen when course setting (or that have moved, possibly due to the recent rain). While we have not had altercations in the past please be aware of your surroundings. You may choose to run with a buddy for safety.

Some of the advanced courses use the drainage area and associated stone walls – please be careful when traversing this area as it is easy to slip on the rounded boulders. Also, access to the wash may require crossing an embankment – again exercise care especially when descending and look for previously used paths or navigate to a lower section.

Long pants and gaiters are recommended for Orange level courses and above.

Additional Information

This event is being held in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation under a community partnership agreement.

Special COOL scoring note:

For safety, COOL league participants will have the option of running in pairs during the league event at Santa Fe Dam without a scoring penalty. Teams that run as pairs will receive points for each runner as if they had run the race as an individual. The scores will then jump down a step for the next team or individual. If the first place finisher is a team, both will get 50 points. The 47 point spot will be skipped and then the next placing individual or team will receive 45 points, etc. Runners that run in pairs should be of near equal skill level if possible.

It is recommended that you register as individuals and then run with your own estick, punching start and finish as closely together as possible. We will be able to tell from the similar times and winsplits that you went as a team for scoring purposes. If there is evidence in the splits that you did not stay together, then you may be scored separately. Please check with the race volunteers if you have questions.
