Red Rock Canyon DIY Classic
Open as of December 11, 2020
Red Rock Canyon State Park, Red Cliffs Picnic Area
RED ROCK CANYON IS CURRENTLY EMBARGOED IN ANTICIPATION OF OUSA NATIONALS TO BE HELD NOV OR DEC 2022.
The embargo area is only to the east of Highway 14. Ricardo campground and the western area is not embargoed. Anyone entering the east portion of the park between now and Nationals will not be eligible for competitive status at the OUSA Nationals.
Our first App based punching event features Classic Courses at Red Rock Canyon State Park.
There are no flags in the terrain. You will download and print the map and then use the MapRunF app on your phone to verify that you are at the correct location.
Standard Yellow through Red are offered, plus a course we are calling Pink. Please keep in mind that because there will not be flags in the terrain, you will have to clearly identify each feature. Your punch won't register until you are pretty close, so this makes it a little more difficult, especially for beginners.
The Pink course is a long hike with Basic level controls. Because there are not flags to see, it is technically somewhere between White and Yellow level. The Pink course has one leg that offers a cross-country route, or you can go around on a trail, but that will be about an extra kilometer. Pink is suitable for adventurous beginners.
Running the course
Important Notes for this event
BE SURE TO SELECT AND LOAD THE EVENT IN THE APP BEFORE YOU ARRIVE - cell phone service at Red Rock is weak or non-existent. Once you are there, you will be able to run the course if it is already loaded, but will not have a connection to download the course.
Similarly, you will need to make sure that your results upload after you have returned to a cell phone service area.
Because of Map and GPS inaccuracy, you may need to move around a little near the control to get a punch. Don't worry about it too much. We can fix a missed punch later if you were in the right place and it didn't punch.
Red Rock Canyon is a more technical and remote area. Please choose a course that is suitable for your experience level.
Although it is winter, this is the desert. Please watch for dehydration. Bring water with you. There is no water placed on the course.
Cell phone service is unreliable on this map. We recommend that you bring a buddy who will know if you finished safely. If you go alone, please make sure someone knows when to expect you home and has a copy of the map.
Please fill out this form to register and accept the waiver. Links to the maps will be emailed to you after registering.
There is no charge for this event.
From Mojave, take CA-14 north 24 miles. Right turn into the picnic area. If you get to the main park entrance on the left, you have gone too far.
