As folks out East were posting about shoveling snow, we were out for another day running around in the sun at Kenneth Hahn. The big change this year was the stairs, which were daunting but allowed easier access to parts of the park. The courses took to us areas of the park where there were swaths of wildflowers with views of LA in and the snow-capped foothills in the distance. It was downright lovely.
A note about Long Orange from Rich, the course setter: A surprising number of people had trouble with control #134 at the North end of a wall. I can take some responsibility for this. Several of the courses approached this control from the south, and those people had no problems finding it. But the Long Orange course approached the control from the northwest, and a number of those people had problems. It turns out there are some unmapped trails to the north of the control that could easily confuse you. I noticed some of these when vetting the controls but decided not to map them because there are to0 many of them and they are constantly changing.
Despite the issue with #134 (5 on Long Orange), Mikhail Biryukov was 1st overall on Long Orange with Madara Brice as first adult female (2nd Overall) and Roland Hansson as first adult male (3rdOverall). Katherine Jung was 1st overall on Medium Orange followed by Justin Scanlon as first adult male. Patrick Qin was 1st overall on Short Orange with Regin Payne as first adult male, Charlotte Lee as first junior female and Susan Tischler as first adult female. Jesse Maldonado was 1st in Yellow with Rachelle Ruvalcaba first junior female and Joe Lasser as first adult male. Wayne Cottrell was 1st overall on White with Angel Ramirez first junior male, Neâ€TMani Neâ€TMani as first junior female, Clare Durand as first adult female. There were some teams out there with Team ThawtsÂ2 first Team on Medium Orange, Team Spamalot was first on Short Orange, Team L'Esprit De L'Escalier was first on Yellow, and Team CherylAL was first on White.
TEMP O
To prepare for the November 2027 World Trail Orienteering Championships, we also had a model Temp-O station available for participants to try out as a Competitor (formal, timed and results recorded) or as a non-Competitor (casual, no timing, no recorded results). We have more Trail O events coming as local club events as well as ones in conjunction with Golden State Champs (Fresno area) and the North American Orienteering Championships (Tucson). These events are intended to introduce Trail Orienteering to our community but also to train our members, as we are hosting the event.
We had about Tempo 20 Competitors with Jason Pan completing all 6 tasks the fastest. Task 3, with Zero being the correct answer, was the most difficult for all participants (Competitors and non-Competitors). Check out Page Two of the Temp O results, which explains why Zero was the correct answer for #3.
