Sunday was a set of classic courses, White through Red, that were a fun navigational challenge and a sweaty physical challenge. We were warned to “get ready to climb,” and Roland’s courses delivered on that promise. It was also a battle with the time change, and adding high temps into the mix created additional excitement. Those who heeded Roland’s notes about the runnability (or lack thereof) in the undergrowth, fared far better than those who didn’t. But even with decent route choice, some of us were still bushwhacking through head high groves of thistles! Happily, many of the thistles were in bloom. Overall, it was another great day of orienteering with about 60 individual participants and nearly 15 teams.

Sunday was also International Women’s Day, and, fittingly, Katherine Jung was first Green, Evelyn Jiang was first Brown, and Polina Biryukova was first Yellow, followed closely by her mom, Katerina Birukova, who was 3rd. Charlotte Lee was 6thon Orange and Octavia Prior was 3rd on White. I was dead last on Red, but I celebrated anyway because I finished and was only about an hour behind Olga Urbanovskaia who was the fastest woman on Red. We also had some international participants, including Sarah Cray, who ran Green as Team SLC.

This event was also the COOL finals. Varsity winners were Katherine Jung and Kaileo Truong, from Troy. Junior Varsity Winners were Charlotte Lee and Aarush Pathak, also from Troy. In the Intermediate Class, it was Troy again, represented by Aimee Halim and Maximus Valesquez. Congratulations to all our youth participants! Final COOL results can be found here.
